People have been asking us about the title of our podcast. It's a great question! What is "soft idolatry?"
As Alan and I (Charissa) were dreaming up this podcast, we landed on the idea of exploring ways that scripture, theology, spirituality, and religion are misused. What are the ways that we allow our "idols" to affect the way we interact with the world, all in the name of scripture or faith? Most of us these days aren't out there bowing down to Golden Calves, but we do have lots of things we love that we try to justify through Scripture and spirituality. It's idolatry, but not the hard core obvious stuff you see in the Old Testament. Our goal is to challenge interpretations of Scripture that have been used to harm others, offer reminders of Scripture that is being misused or ignored, and to help provide some in depth understanding of why reading the Bible is so complicated.
